How to Choose Prompts for Measuring AI Visibility

Prompt questions determine whether you measure the real buying journey or only interesting answers with little business value.

Prompts are a measurement instrument

In AI visibility, a prompt is not only a way to get an answer. It is the measurement instrument. If the questions are poorly chosen, you measure the wrong thing: general model knowledge, team curiosity or one-time randomness, not the real buying journey.

A good prompt set represents the questions customers actually ask before deciding. It includes definitions, comparisons, provider selection, objections, local context and late-stage buying questions.

Cover the buying journey

Start with intent groups: informational questions, comparison questions, provider questions and decision questions about price, risk, support or reliability.

If you only measure generic prompts, answers are too broad. If you only measure branded prompts, the result is too optimistic. Balance matters.

Use the buyer's natural language

Prompts should not sound like SEO keywords. A better prompt is: “Which tool can show whether ChatGPT mentions our B2B brand in comparison questions?” This reveals whether the model knows the category, can compare providers, understands the use case and which sources it uses.

Measure across models and languages

The same prompt can produce very different answers in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or AI Overviews. If you sell in multiple countries, add local language and local constraints.

Keep a stable set

For trend analysis, keep a stable set of questions. Improve prompts carefully, but do not replace the full set every week. The best system has a core of stable prompts and a smaller experimental set for new themes.
